Many of the services and benefits now available to people with disabilities are supported by federal or state funds and are founded on laws, rules and regulations established at the state and federal level. It is critical to have a strong voice at the State Capitol in Harrisburg and in Washington D.C. The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh is one of Pennsylvania’s leading advocacy organizations devoted to working with local, state and federal elected officials and government employees on issues that impact people with disabilities and their families. AGP staff monitor proposed legislation, regulations and bulletins and analyze the potential impact they would have on people with disabilities. Our analysis is based on ensuring that the rights and entitlements of people with disabilities are protected and that high quality supports and services are available to meet their needs.
The AGP encourages and works with concerned citizens to get involved with the legislative process and to communicate with elected officials and government employees. Whether you send an email, pay a visit, make a phone call, sign a petition, or attend a rally, making your opinions known is vital if systems are to change. And, people with disabilities and their family members are in the best position to tell officials what it is like to have a disability or to be a caregiver for someone with a disability.
