Statement regarding "Tropic Thunder"

“In our culture, words such as “retard,” which is used throughout the movie "Tropic Thunder,' carry a lot of baggage from the days when people with disabilities were institutionalized in large state facilities. These hurtful words also create negative stereotypes that lead to discrimination and often times abuse – just as certain words do for African-Americans or people of the Jewish faith.

Today, children with all types of disabilities are included in schools, people are employed in all types of jobs, they work, they vote, they pay taxes. People with disabilities do not deserve to be treated in such a dehumanizing way.

We would hope that the community chooses to boycott this movie. By not attending the movie, you are showing people with disabilities and their families the respect that they deserve.
