Transitional Living

ACHIEVA launched its transitional living program for young adults in 2006. Named The Ludwig Family Transitional Living Program, this program, in partnership with Pittsburgh Public Schools’ C.I.T.Y. Connections programs, provides high school seniors with disabilities the opportunity to experience a short-term, independent living situation.

Situated on Pittsburgh’s South Side, this site provides several students a two-week educational program that teaches them daily living skills, including meal preparation, budgeting, daily planning, laundry, and household abilities, as well as community enjoyment and socialization skills.

The program has already been quite successful, as evidenced by the students who have graduated the program. One student said, “I had a roommate, my first roommate. Linda taught us how to shop. We cleaned up dishes. I really enjoyed ACHIEVA house.  It was good.”

The program is also beneficial to parents who may be apprehensive about the thought of their child living without them for several days.  A parent stated, “It was a good experience. She was away for two weeks and came home on the weekend. I really appreciated the place. What ACHIEVA does for our children, I cannot emulate. You help us to help our children to go on.”

This program is currently limited to City of Pittsburgh high school seniors. When proper funding is made available, youth from other school districts will be included and additional sites will be established.
