We'll be commemorating Achieva's 70th Anniversary throughout 2021 as we highlight the last 7 decades through interviews, stories, and video. We'll take a closer look at the impact Achieva has had throughout the Pittsburgh area and beyond.
We invite you to celebrate with us by being among the first to join Achieva's new Monthly Giving Club! Your commitment today indicates your desire to be a part of a dedicated group of individuals who want to make an impact on the lives of people with disabilities and their families. The goal for Achieva's 70th year celebration is to welcome 70 generous donors into our monthly giving club.
Together, we can help people lead lives of personal significance. Register now and be a “star” in the lives of people with disabilities!
How it all began...
Formed in 1951, Achieva began as the Allegheny County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (ACC-PARC). ACC-PARC was established as a grassroots organization comprised of the parents of people with disabilities which operated under the name "the Greater Pittsburgh Association of Parents and Friends of the Mentally Retarded."
In 1981, ACC-PARC complied with its parent organization's name change and became the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) of Allegheny County. In 1992, our organization once again followed the lead of its umbrella entity and became the Arc Allegheny. Arc Allegheny was later combined with the Arc of Beaver County to become The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh.
Today, Achieva remains a chapter of The Arc using a name that has aptly changed with the times! Our organization's name has evolved and our family has grown but our commitment to people with disabilities remains the same.
