The I’M Determined Project believes that the opportunity to practice skills associated with self-determination are critical for personal growth and development. Opportunities are the spaces where skills can be practiced and developed. For parents, professionals, and advocates it is important to consider the architecture of opportunity and reflect on the inclusivity of classroom and community context. We ask the question: Do students have amble opportunity to act, speak, or make choices in the environments they reside? This question when reflected upon shows supporters the spaces where self-determined behavior can thrive and the areas where adjustments are needed.
This webinar will address the role of creating a space for self-determined behavior to occur and then provide practices associated with self-determination. The I’M Determined project utilizes a variety of tools, processes, and ways of thinking to actualize self-determination. These can be applied to teaching, instructional planning, and in the development of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Further, the practice of self-determination is a universal principle that has applications in all parts of life and human development . Our hope is that this introductory conversation to self-determination can be an entry point for re-thinking traditional procedures and processes in special education. Valuing diversity and inclusion means making room for self-determination. Together lets innovate and practice what it means to be a social architect who builds spaces where youth with disabilities have opportunities to act, learn, and grow.
