Achieva, an organization that advocates with, empowers, and supports people with disabilities and their families throughout their lives, seeks an experienced advocate and nonprofit leader to serve as the President of The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh.  The President of The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh will report to the Achieva President and Chief Executive Officer and be a member of Achieva’s Executive Team.

Oversight Responsibilities

The President of The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh provides overall leadership for The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh, an affiliate organization within The Achieva Family of Organizations; collaborates with The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh Board of Trustees and reports to the Achieva President and Chief Executive Officer; leads a team of professionals to advocate with individuals with disabilities and their families, provide family support, perform systems advocacy activities, and secure and manage financial resources to support the organization’s mission. 


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Works with county, state and federal officials to promote the civil rights of people with disabilities and increase access to innovative and high-quality supports and services so that people with disabilities can lead lives of personal significance. 
  • Develops and implements policies, develops and monitors organizational budgets, secures and ensures efficient and effective utilization of funding and implements a strategic plan that strengthens and expands services offered by The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh.
  • Manages, supervises, and leads a team of professionals; recruits, hires, orients, and evaluates The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh staff and the Executive Director of The Arc of Erie County, PA (a subsidiary affiliate of The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh).
  • Adheres to the mission, vision, core values, and strategic priorities of Achieva. Develops and implements Strategic Vision Plan initiatives.
  • Keeps abreast of activities and public policy positions of The Arc, both at the state and national levels; represents The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh with The Arc of Pennsylvania, The Arc of the United States,  the National Conference of Executives of The Arc (NCE), and the Pennsylvania Conference of Executives of The Arc (PCE).
  • Leads organizational efforts to provide individual advocacy, family support, and self-advocate leadership development.
  • Leads Achieva’s systems advocacy efforts, which means activities to promote systems change that furthers the empowerment of people with disabilities and enables them to lead lives of personal significance. This is done through state and federal budget advocacy, legal action to protect the rights of people with disabilities, and large-scale grants and funding streams to effectuate change on a macro-level; maintains a leadership role within the state and federal disability community to preserve and expand the stature of The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh and Achieva; keeps abreast of proposed and enacted disability-related federal, state, and local laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines.
  • Abides by standards for lobbyists as established by the Pennsylvania State Ethics Commission and other laws or authorities.
  • Attends meetings, travels to Harrisburg and Washington D.C. as necessary, and collaborates with state and national organizations and associations, appointed and elected government officials, and other community partners and advocates.
  • Provides information and consultation to other affiliates within The Achieva Family of Organization and members of its Executive Management Team. 
  • Represents the official position of The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh/Achieva on committees, task forces and at public hearings.
  • Responsible for writing or collaborating in the preparation of testimony and comments in response to issues.
  • Provides education and training to families and members of the general public on disability-related issues.
  • Keeps Achieva’s Top Management Team, Executive Team, and Trustees of The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh, The Arc Erie County, and Achieva informed of federal, state, and local issues that impact the lives of children and adults with disabilities and their families; serves as a member of Achieva’s Executive Team and other Achieva teams as assigned; serves as the staff liaison to the Boards of Trustees for The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh, The Arc of Erie County, and Achieva.
  • Ensures compliance with organizational policies and procedures, including but not limited to Achieva’s code of conduct, financial, human resources, and other personnel policies and procedures.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors annual operational budgets, ensuring financial integrity and discipline, and seeks new funding opportunities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 
 

Experience and Attributes

  • The equivalent of a postgraduate degree in social work, public policy, education, law, or community organization and 5-7 years of related experience.
  • Proven supervisory, administrative, organizational, and negotiation skills. 
  • Proven ability to work effectively with families, people with disabilities, other professionals, government officials, and legislators is essential. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Ability to set priorities and organize multiple tasks. 
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as a business imperative. 
  • Proficient in Google Workspace or related software. 

Requirements

  • Satisfactory Act 33/34 clearances. 
  • Must have a valid license and a properly insured vehicle for daily use.
  • Must be willing to travel locally and out of town. Must be willing to attend evening and weekend meetings.
