Cory Gilden, Ph.D., Research and Evaluation Manager of the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities

The presenters will provide the results of their research based on a national survey of over 5000 individuals, family members and professionals, regarding the challenges faced by individuals and families in the Future Planning process.  They will review the results of the surveys and provide valuable recommendations going forward for improving access to resources in the Future Planning process for individuals and families.

Individuals with disabilities and their families have options when it comes to saving for the future, while protecting vital government benefits.  This presentation will review the basics of Special Needs Trusts and ABLE accounts and how they might be applied to a future plan with the goal of enhancing the quality of life for individuals.

This presentation will review and clarify the various legal options that are available to assist individuals with disabilities in the decision making process.  This includes the considerations of when guardianship might be appropriate, as opposed to Powers of Attorney, and how Supported Decision Making might be applied.

Charting the LifeCourse is a model for Person-Centered Planning that encourages the engagement of the individual, their family and support persons in a meaningful planning process for the future that imagines the best life possible for the individual. This includes the supports that enable that goal. The presenters will provide the basics of the model and an example of how it can be applied in a real life situation.

Planning for life beyond high school can be a confusing and challenging process.  This presentation will review the role of the school district in the transition process, as well as the adult support systems that are available to meet the needs of the student transitioning.  The experiences of two mothers with the transition of their children, and their recommendations for navigating the process will also be discussed.
 
Presenter: Jennifer Nanji, Financial Empowerment Center Counselor

The Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) provides free consultations to individuals and families to assist them in financial planning, in the areas of budgeting, savings, debt reduction and student debt. The goals of the FEC are to empower individuals to enhance their financial literacy and stability and to plan for their financial future.
