Achieva Family Trust Delivers Life-Changing Support to Hundreds of Pennsylvanians with Nearly $2 Million in Grants

Achieva Family Trust Delivers Life-Changing Support to Hundreds of Pennsylvanians with Nearly $2 Million in Grants
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pittsburgh, PA  – More than 900 Pennsylvanians with disabilities received essential assistance this year thanks to the Achieva Family Trust’s Charitable Residual Program, which distributed nearly $2 million in grants during the last fiscal year. These funds provided critical support to people with disabilities and their families across the state—covering needs not funded by other sources, from specialized therapies and adaptive equipment to recreational activities that improve quality of life.

One of the program’s many success stories is Daniel Shaffer, a 31-year-old man from Shippensburg, PA, who faces significant developmental, physical, and sensory challenges. Deaf, legally blind, and requiring full-time support, Daniel has long found joy and therapeutic benefit in horseback riding. However, funding his sessions became increasingly difficult over the years—until the Achieva Family Trust’s Charitable Residual Program stepped in.

Daniel's mother, Susan Shaffer, recalls how horseback riding became a transformative activity for her son. “He learned how to sit up on a horse. It helped his balance, attention, and even calmed him down emotionally,” she shared. As Daniel got older, resources became harder to access, particularly after he moved into a community home following graduation.

In 2021, Daniel’s county caseworker suggested the Achieva Family Trust, and the family applied for support through the Charitable Residual Program. The application process was simple and responsive. Since then, Daniel has returned to Walnut Grove Farm, riding up to twice a week—an experience that has been nothing short of life-changing.

“His balance and focus have improved dramatically,” said Susan. “He listens to his trainer, can direct the horse to turn or stop, and he’s even going to be in a horse show this October in Harrisburg.”

Daniel’s sessions cost just $30 each—far less than other programs charging up to $85—and the Trust’s support ensures he can continue benefitting from the program. “We’re now retired. Without this program, we simply couldn’t do this,” Susan explained. “If we’re not here someday, his group home can still apply on his behalf. That gives us peace of mind.”

The Charitable Residual Program uses funds left in Pooled Trust accounts after a beneficiary passes away to support people with disabilities in Pennsylvania. To date, the program has provided more than $14 million in supplemental support.

“We are incredibly proud to have reached this significant milestone,” said Amy Dolan Strano, President of Achieva Family Trust and Senior Vice President of Achieva. “Each grant—big or small—represents a meaningful step toward enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. We are deeply committed to continuing this vital work and expanding our impact.”

The program helps cover a wide range of needs, including home and vehicle modifications, adapted technology, recreational equipment, and therapies not covered by insurance or waivers. It is open to Pennsylvania residents of any age with developmental, physical, or mental health disabilities.
