Maddy's New Chapter

Maddy's New Chapter: Independence, Community, and Joy
In November 2025, Maddy took a big step toward independence - she moved into her ery own home through Achieva's Community Supported Living program. After nearly 28 years of daily care from her family, this transition marked a new chapter in her life, one filled with choice, growth, and exciting adventures in her community.
Maddy's journey began in the summer when Achieva staff members Faith Vickinovac and Kirsten Beining spent time with her, helping her get familiar wih the support team. This early introduction eased the shift from lviing with her family to living independently, making the transition smoother and more comfortable. Staying close to her loved ones was important to Maddy; her new home is just three minutes from her family's house, allowing her to maintain strong connections while carving out her own space.

Maddy's days are now filled with activities she loves. She enjoys exploring restuarants, visiting the mall, hunting for CDs at Goodwill, trips to Target, and even spending time at the playground. Achieva's Comunity Supported Living program allows her to engage in the world on her terms, with the right balance of support and independence.

Setting up her home was a hands-on experience for Maddy. With guidance from Faith and Kirsten, she picked out furniture, decorated her space, and shopped for household essentials. Today, she lives entirely on her own, supported 24 hours a day by dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). This support ensures she can thrive safely while still making her own decisions - a cornerstone of Achieva's person-centered approach.

Achieva operates nearly 50 licensed community homes across Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, offering adults with disabilities the opportunity to live independently while receiving as much - or as little - support as they need, from 30 hours a week up to 24-hour care. The focus is always on empowering residents, fostering growth and promoting vibrant lives.

DSPs at Achieva understand the importance of relationships, privacy, and dignity. By supporting residents like Maddy, they help people with disabilities pursue their hoes and dreams, showing that independent living is not just possible - it's a joyful, fulfilling reality.
