Erie News Now: Housing for Adults with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities

Originally aired May 1, 2026 on Erie News Now

Parents of adults with autism are making it a point to meet with legislatures about housing concerns for their children.

An event, hosted by Erie Advocacy Collaborative for Housing and Arc Erie County, helped raise awareness.

Parents say it's an opportunity to discuss the housing crisis that exists for adults with disabilities — specifically autism and intellectual disabilities.

They discussed the growing need for accessible housing and support services.

Parents were able to share stories and provide more details on current barriers, which they say could lead to a collaborative discussion on potential solutions and legislative priorities.

According to the Arc of Erie County, only 32 to 35 affordable units exist for every 100 extremely low-income renters, and many adults with autism and intellectual disabilities rely on fixed incomes.

Parents are asking lawmakers to increase Medicaid waiver funding to also reduce waitlists for independent living.
