PITTSBURGH, PA —On the seventh commemoration of the Tree of Life synagogue tragedy, Achieva is continuing its commitment to the legacy of Cecil and David Rosenthal by announcing a new series of grants provided through the Cecil and David Rosenthal Memorial Fund. Following the tragedy, an outpouring of international donations led the board to create the Fund as a lasting tribute. Established to honor the long-time Achieva support recipients whose lives were tragically cut short, the Fund continues to support community engagement activities pursued by people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. That spirit of connection and celebration lives on through the stories it makes possible—like that of Zach Dixon.
The unforgettable experience of Zach Dixon recently demonstrated the Fund’s heartfelt mission. His “once-in-a-lifetime” dream of proposing to his long-time girlfriend, Kristin, came true thanks to a grant from the Fund. The warm and relaxed atmosphere of Nassau, Bahamas, served as the backdrop for Zach to approach Kristin, kneel, and ask her to marry him—a genuine, joyful moment that is the mission of the Fund in action.
“The milestone of seven years since the tragedy is a solemn one, but the joy that’s made possible by the Rosenthal Fund is a powerful testament to Cecil and David’s enduring light,” said Steve Suroviec, Achieva’s President and CEO. “By funding opportunities like Zach’s proposal trip, adaptive equipment, and museum access, the Fund is not just granting wishes, it’s making possible a world in which every person with a disability experiences the essential human dignity of belonging, exploration, and the pursuit of a life of personal significance.”
Since October 2024, the Rosenthal Fund has approved 93 applications, totaling over $80,000 in support. These grants directly reflect the Fund’s dedication to enhancing community participation and accessible recreation for people with IDD.
Examples of the life-changing opportunities the Fund has provided include:
Since its inception, the Fund has provided over $165,000 worth of products and services to 232 people.
